SME Tonearm Servicing — In Partnership with Mr SME

The world’s only independent factory-trained SME tonearm engineer, now available through Unique Audio. We are proud to offer a specialist SME tonearm servicing and repair service in partnership with Mr SME — operated by Brian Laker, the only factory-trained SME engineer now working independently.

Brian spent over 35 years at the SME factory in Steyning, West Sussex, progressing from assembly technician to Service Manager. During his tenure he worked across production, servicing, quality control and was involved in the development of multiple SME turntable and tonearm models. He left SME in November 2025 and now offers his expertise directly to owners worldwide.

About Mik Bhavnani & Unique Audio’s SME Heritage

A relationship with SME spanning over four decades — and the knowledge to prove it.

Mikolash Bhavnani — known to the analogue world simply as Mik — has been working with SME tonearms since his early teens. By the age of 14, Mik had already established a commercial relationship with SME, beginning what would become one of the longest and most deeply informed associations with the brand in the industry.

Unique Audio, the company Mik founded,  has vast experience on every model of Sme tonearms and every option available and can now help you unleash the highest level of performance though various options of wiring and tweaking taking the performance of your tonearm to a entirely different level.

Unique Audio worked closely with SME’s founder Alistair Aikman, establishing the business as the premier supplier of SME tonearms globally. Mik’s knowledge extends from the very earliest vintage models through to the modern range — his personal SME arm collection could serve as an audiophile museum, and he owns the very first SME Model 30 turntable ever produced.

Unique Audio is also the only UK dealer specialising in pre-owned SME tonearms, holding a vast range from vintage to modern — including very rare bespoke examples. Every arm that passes through is assessed by Mik personally, drawing on his unmatched contextual knowledge of the brand’s entire output.

It is this heritage — over 40 years of working with SME at the highest level — that makes the partnership with Brian Laker of Mr SME so natural. Between them, Mik and Brian represent the two most authoritative SME specialists working independently anywhere in the world: Mik as the dealer and collector who has handled more SME tonearms than arguably anyone else alive, and Brian as the only factory-trained engineer now offering independent servicing. When you send your SME tonearm for service through Unique Audio, it sits at the intersection of those two lifetimes of expertise.

There is simply no one better qualified. Brian Laker knows these tonearms from the inside out — because he helped build, test and quality-control them at the factory for decades. Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my SME tonearm needs servicing?

Common signs include tracking issues or mistracking at normal weights, a loss of detail and soundstage compared to how the arm previously performed, notchy or stiff bearing movement, channel imbalance, or a crackling or intermittent signal. Vintage arms used regularly — or those that have been stored for years — benefit from a full service regardless of obvious symptoms. If in doubt, get in touch and we can advise. Tonearms carry very low level signals and overtime the performance deteriorates  we have found many arms that are still functioning strongly benefit from being tuned. There are many further enhancements that can be added to take your analogue  playback to the next level please call Mik on 07913964746 to discuss in detail what can be done.

How long does an SME tonearm service take?

Typical turnaround is 2–3 weeks from receipt of the arm. We’ll confirm a timeline when you book, and you’ll be kept informed throughout the process.

How do I send my SME tonearm safely for service?

We’ll provide detailed packing guidance before you ship. In most cases, arms can be removed from the turntable and packed in a rigid box with foam. We strongly recommend using a tracked, insured courier service.

Can you service vintage SME arms like the 3009 and 3012?

Absolutely. Brian has extensive experience with SME’s vintage range as well as the modern arms. The 3009 and 3012 in particular benefit enormously from a proper bearing and wiring service, and Brian has the knowledge and parts to restore them correctly.

How much does an SME tonearm service cost?

Pricing depends on the model and condition of the arm. Contact us with your model and we’ll provide a clear quote before any work begins. There are no surprises.

Do you service SME tonearms from outside the UK?

Yes. Arms are accepted from Europe and internationally. We’ll advise on the best shipping method and any customs considerations for your country. Contact us first so we can make the process as smooth as possible.

Who carries out the technical work?

All technical work is carried out by Brian Laker at his workshop in West Sussex. Brian is the former SME Service Manager and the only factory-trained SME engineer now working independently. The service is arranged through Unique Audio, whose founder Mik Bhavnani has worked with SME for over 40 years who can help with choosing the best options available to you.
